My best Olympic sports writing, dating back … xxx years …

A lot of the work I did in 2002, 2004 and 2006 for USA TODAY is, alas, gone. Some of what I did in 2008 barely exists any more.

But I’ve managed to save some of my work from my decade at USA TODAY, along with the work I’ve done for NBC, Bleacher Report and a few other places from 2012 to 2021. These days, you’ll find most of my writing at The Guardian.

Issues

Personalities

Ideas

Live coverage and analysis: Tokyo

I worked overnight shifts for NBC (remotely) but still did some work for The Guardian.

One of my favorite leads: “France advanced to the Olympic women’s basketball quarterfinals with a 93–82 loss to the United States on Monday.”

Live coverage and analysis: Rio

Mostly for The Guardian.

Live coverage and analysis: London

I worked for Bleacher Report and also a now-defunct aggregation service.

On the snow (in person) in Whistler

My last Olympics (so far) in person.

“The German people make very party …”

The most improbable US women’s soccer gold — live in-person story and a follow-up years later

Other events covered in person in Beijing

The highlight: I encountered the quotable Icelandic handball team, then met the president and first lady.
